Keep your Friends Close & your Farmers Closer
The Farmers market is about building relationships. It is a common misbelief that everything at a farmers market is local, organic, and not sprayed with chemicals. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
The best way to find out the source of your food is to ask and let your farmers help educate you.
Top 5 Questions to Ask your Farmer:
1. Is it Sprayed?
Organic foods can still have "organic" pesticides which are really just pesticides that the USDA claims are less toxic, but are still pesticides. Not spraying involves using no chemicals to produce the crop.
2. Is it Local?
If it's not local, you might as well continue your weekend shopping at Whole Foods, as you are contributing to transporting goods releasing environmental waste in the air.
3. Is it GMO?
GMO foods have created concern with gene mutation, antibiotic resistance, loss of nutrition, environmental issues, and other unknowns. When in doubt, don't GMO about!
4. Is it Heirloom?
Heirloom plants are a sign of biodiversity and a good farmer who cares about the integrity of his/her produce.
5. What produce is the BEST?
Your farmers know the best products and when they are tasting or looking the fullest.
