Sunscreen | Top 5 Watch List
Love playing in the sun, but don't want to damage your skin?
Sunscreen can be a necessary product when increasing your sun exposure, but beware. Studies have found that many sunscreens actually contain carcinogens that cause skin cancer.
Here are the top 5 things to look for when buying a sun screen.
1. Oxybenzone
Oxybenzone is a hormone disruptor which can actually lead to skin cancer. It is most commonly found in spray sunscreens.
2. Nano particles
Sunscreen needs something to emulsify the zinc oxide, in order for it to look transparent on your skin. Many sunscreens contain nano particles with acts as small micro beads to help transparency. These particles are abrasive and toxic to the health of your skin.
3. Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate)
Retinyl palmitate is a common additive in sunscreen. Studies have been shown to link it to lesions and tumors. In 2010 40% of all sunscreens contained this additive, now in 2016 only 16% do.
4. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide
Mineral based sunscreens should have either one, Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, as the active ingredient in sunscreen. Both have shown no significant signs of toxicity and protect against UVA and UVB damage.
5. Don't Inhale
Spray sunscreens are most commonly used. These have negative effects on the body, as one is ingesting the sunscreen when spraying. Take the extra 10 minutes to use a rub in sunscreen as it could add years onto your life!
Please note: Sunscreen does NOT protect against all sun damage
Although sunscreen does protect against UVA and UVB rays, it does not protect against free radicles. The best way to minimize your risk to sun damage is with regulated exposure, coverings (hat, sunglasses, sweater), and moisture. When you moisture you restore water and nutrients back into the skin.
